Apps to Support Pre-Writing, Printing & Writing Skills:
Doodle Buddy: is a great medium to release your inner artist on the iPad. When you first launch the app, it opens to a blank white canvas, and all your tools are located on the bottom dock. The tool dock houses all your materials and resources. I will start from the left and work my way down the tool dock. The first two icons on the dock are: Undo and Clear. On the iPad making mistakes is effortless to clear. No need to use that rubber eraser, just tap the undo arrow and your last action will be erased. Tapping the trash bin icon will clear your canvas completely. Tip: you can also shake the iPad to clear your canvas.

Printing & Writing Apps:
iWriteWords:iWriteWords teaches your child how to write in an easy and fun way. Children learn to print letters as they help Mr. Crab collect the numbers in sequence by dragging him with your finger - and drawing the letter at the same time. Once all the letters in the word are drawn properly, a cute drawing appears. To move to the next letter, one needs to slide the letters into the rotating hole.
ABC Pocket Phonics: This app is designed to teach children how to say and write letters and simple words in a fully interactive way.The first time you start up ABC Pocketphonics, you can decide how you want to learn sounds. You can opt between cursive, lowercase or uppercase, although the app recommends cursive or lowercase because this is how children are taught sounds at school. You can also decide between a US or UK voice. When you start ABC Pocketphonics, you will be presented with the sounds screen. Tap on any of the sounds to practice writing them and listening to the sound. The voice will encourage you to repeat the sound to learn it.There are also other ‘games’, including word games where the voice will say a sound and you have to tap it. When you’ve chosen letters to make a word, it is then recited and you are again encouraged to pronounce it. ABC Pocketphonics is a very basic application in functionality, but it is effective, with a simple, child-friendly interface.
Interactive Alphabet: This app devotes one full screen to each letter, combining great word choices with interactive content that kids will love. You’re initially presented with a magnetic board-like list of letters on a plain white background with one of three cheery songs, and need to tap on any one to see the screen devoted to its letter. The letter is spoken once aloud, then a phrase is said, such as “N is for Noodles,” as an animation starts and the same phrase appears on screen. A swipe or tap gesture typically makes the specified word move in some way; swiping upwards makes the noodles fling into the air from chopsticks to become a smiley face.

When a story is completed, it can be exported to a photo library, or if a wireless network is available, can be emailed, sent to Evernote or Twitter.

Intellipad App: Intellipad is one of the first notepad apps that provide basic text to speech capabilities, word prediction, picture support and a customizable keyboard. Used for word processing, completing assignments or as a notepad with a customized keyboard to modify and adapt. The ability to modify is something that OTs rely on to allow students access to their curriculum.
Word prediction is available with the ability to hear each word before selection. Customization for text to speech, word prediction, spelling is limited at present, primarily allowing that function to be on or off. There are six different voices (UK or US English) but rate and pronunciation correction setting are not options. The text to speech is all or none. It reads the text from beginning to end when you press the speech button. No pausing or starting from the point of the cursor.
Available to customize is the keyboard to be used as a word processor or as a word bank with modifications for size and color of the keyboard and what the keys will represent. The app provides sharing of other users customized keyboards which is a time saver and a springboard for other creative ways of using the app. Here is a great example of a modified keyboard to support basic sentence generation:
Another great feature is the ability to split the screen with a photo, providing great visual support for students. This example shows how it can be customized to complete an assignment.
PredictAble: PredictAble is an app that includes both word prediction and switch access for AAC users. For further information on this app, training videos and step-by-step instructions as to how to employ switch access - Please click here.
