 Cost: $4.99

  • Dexteria: Dexteria is a set of therapeutic hand exercises (not games) that improves fine motor skills and handwriting readiness in children and adults. Dexteria’s unique hand and finger exercises take full advantage of the iPad’s, iPhone’s and iPod touch’s multi-touch interface to help build strength, control, and dexterity.

  • iMazing: An easy to use app that allows students to complete mazes of varying difficulty with the touch of their finger.

  • Dots 4 Tots: (Cost: $0.99) Dots 4 Tots teaches young children animals, shapes, Letters and Numbers, all while improving their hand-eye coordination and motor skills. To play this app, select a category and then using the app’s helpful prompts, children simply trace their finger from point to point to complete the pattern.

  •  DrumMeister & Garageband: Drum Meister is a full featured top-down view drumming app for the iPhone and iPod touch with the native drum sounds a large selection of real life drum pieces that you can arrange to personalize your very own drum set. The app has gone through a few version upgrades and is by now very much stable and works almost flawlessly. When you open the app you see your drum set and can customize this by tapping the i button and then choosing “Arrange” and then the red circled arrow button. From here you will see a ribbon of all the drum components that you can drag onto the stage to create your very own set. The pieces include Kick, Snare, Toms, Hihat, Crash, Ride, Splash, Chinese Cymbol, Cowbell, Reverse Cymbal, Brushed Hihat, Brushed Cymbal and Brushed Snare. If you ever mess up a layout, you can go to the options page and reset the drum arrangement positions.

  • Sam Phibian: (Cost: Free) Sam Phibian can only make it through the day by counting the bugs he eats. Eating too many bugs--or eating the silly things in his swamp that aren't bugs at all--will cause Sam to grow too big for his lily pad!

Apps to Support Visual Perceptual Skills:

  • Shape Builder: (Free app) The Shape Builder app educates and entertains young children with easy to move shapes that snap into place on top of silhouette puzzles. Each puzzle (total 146 puzzles) has 5 to 10 pieces and after positioning all of the pieces, the real image is revealed along with a professional voice recording of the word spoken by a licensed speech therapist, Jill Dews. Shape Builder encourages cognitive thinking and fine motor skills plus exposes young minds to new music instruments, animals, produce, objects and the alphabet in a fun and engaging format with LOTS of sound effects!

Apps to Support Pre-Writing, Printing & Writing Skills:

  •  Doodle Buddy: is a great medium to release your inner artist on the iPad.  When you first launch the app, it opens to a blank white canvas, and all your tools are located on the bottom dock.  The tool dock houses all your materials and resources.  I will start from the left and work my way down the tool dock.  The first two icons on the dock are: Undo and Clear.  On the iPad making mistakes is effortless to clear.  No need to use that rubber eraser, just tap the undo arrow and your last action will be erased.  Tapping the trash bin icon will clear your canvas completely.  Tip: you can also shake the iPad to clear your canvas.

  • Skywrite: Realistic skywriting. Skywriting is the app that lets you write your name in the sky and watch it waft away like real skywriting. Sketch a picture or write a message in the sky, then save a picture of your work before it drifts away.

  • Match it Up Level 1
  • Match it Up Level 2
  • Match it Up Level 3
  • Quibble Kids

Printing & Writing Apps:

  • iWriteWords: iWriteWords teaches your child how to write in an easy and fun way. Children learn to print letters as they help Mr. Crab collect the numbers in sequence by dragging him with your finger - and drawing the letter at the same time. Once all the letters in the word are drawn properly, a cute drawing appears. To move to the next letter, one needs to slide the letters into the rotating hole.

  • ABC Pocket Phonics: This app is designed to teach children how to say and write letters and simple words in a fully interactive way.The first time you start up ABC Pocketphonics, you can decide how you want to learn sounds. You can opt between cursive, lowercase or uppercase, although the app recommends cursive or lowercase because this is how children are taught sounds at school. You can also decide between a US or UK voice. When you start ABC Pocketphonics, you will be presented with the sounds screen. Tap on any of the sounds to practice writing them and listening to the sound. The voice will encourage you to repeat the sound to learn it.There are also other ‘games’, including word games where the voice will say a sound and you have to tap it. When you’ve chosen letters to make a word, it is then recited and you are again encouraged to pronounce it. ABC Pocketphonics is a very basic application in functionality, but it is effective, with a simple, child-friendly interface.

  • Interactive Alphabet: This app devotes one full screen to each letter, combining great word choices with interactive content that kids will love. You’re initially presented with a magnetic board-like list of letters on a plain white background with one of three cheery songs, and need to tap on any one to see the screen devoted to its letter. The letter is spoken once aloud, then a phrase is said, such as “N is for Noodles,” as an animation starts and the same phrase appears on screen. A swipe or tap gesture typically makes the specified word move in some way; swiping upwards makes the noodles fling into the air from chopsticks to become a smiley face.

  • Alphabet Tracing
  • Animals Counting Writing Game

  • Use your handwriting Gold: This app allows users to create lists using handwriting as opposed to having to rely on the iOS popup keyboard. Either use your finger or a stylus...great for kids to practice their emerging cursive handwriting skills.

  • Fast Finga: Fast finga is another printing handwriting app. One fun literacy activity for use in the classroom is to use Fast Finga to create a rebus story using the many pictures, emoticons and symbols contained in the app.   Files can be saved in folders and named so that children can return to a story to finish or edit.  When a story is completed, it can be exported to a photo library, or if a wireless network is available, can be emailed, sent to Evernote or Twitter.

Learning/Studying Apps

  • Noteable
  • Intellipad App: Intellipad is one of the first notepad apps that provide basic text to speech capabilities, word prediction, picture support and a customizable keyboard. Used for word processing, completing assignments or as a notepad with a customized keyboard to modify and adapt. The ability to modify is something that OTs rely on to allow students access to their curriculum.

Word prediction is available with the ability to hear each word before selection. Customization for text to speech, word prediction,      spelling is limited at present, primarily allowing that function to be on or off.  There are six different voices (UK or US English) but rate      and pronunciation correction setting are not options. The text to speech is all or none. It reads the text from beginning to end when      you press the speech button. No pausing or starting from the point of the cursor.

Available to customize is the keyboard to be used as a word processor or as a word bank with modifications for size and color of the      keyboard and what the keys will represent. The app provides sharing of other users customized keyboards which is a time saver and      a springboard for other creative ways of using the app. Here is a great example of a modified keyboard to support basic sentence      generation:

Another great feature is the ability to split the screen with a photo, providing great visual support for
students. This example shows how      it can be customized to complete an assignment.

PredictAblePredictAble is an app that includes both word prediction and switch access for AAC users. For further information on this app, training videos and step-by-step instructions as to how to employ switch access - Please click here.
