What exactly is Assistive Technology?

Formally, assistive technology means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabiltiies of a child with a disability.

Informally, assistive technology is any device or tool that:

  • facilitates the use of classroom materials and technology so that all students can access the curriculum.
  • offers alternate ways to participate in activities for all students, to move throughout the environment and to access and communicate information.
  • provides the means to modify classroom tasks for students with varying abilities,
  • can change a child's life by increasing learning opportunities and making it possible to demonstrate knowledge and skills.

Please put away your hammer! The Art and Science of Assessing for AT

Knowing what to address in an AT assessment is similar to other assessments that are done. To optimize the likelihood that the team will be able to put together a system of "useable" tools for a student, the student's team needs to explore the student (strengths and challenges), the environments in which the student is expected to use the tools, and the tasks which are an inherent part of communicating, participating and being productive in those environments. This all needs to  considered before attempting to identify the features or components of the tools needed. To structure this assessment process, Joy Zabala has created the SETT Framework to assist teams where SETT stands for:

S for the Student

E for the Environment

T for the Tasks

T for the Tools needed

for the student to address the tasks.

What is New in the World of Assistive Technology?

  • It is becoming increasingly universal and free - Click here to explore the myriad of free assistive technology for all!
  • Social media! Websites such as Youtube, Facebook and Twitter have revolutionized assistive technology and have increased the digital literacy of students, staff, parents, and grandparents.
  • Technology (cell phones, laptops, ipods, tablets etc) have become increasingly mobile to enable use in multiple environments.
  • By using mainstream technology - it has an inherent "cool" factor.
